After two months of searching for a suitable studio location, Alan Cherrington, one of Pulse Radio's very own directors has come to it's aid by donating premises within Cheddar.
Chief Executive Mark Carney made the formal announcement during the 27th May 2010 fortnightly directors meeting held at the Frazer Hall, Mark said “Alan has kindly donated the premises rent FREE for the better of the community, he wished to see the station succeed and knowing how important it was for Pulse Radio to secure a suitable location to aid in its funding applications, he was also fully aware of the importance that it had to give line of sight to the proposed Fry's Hill transmitter above Axbridge.” Mark continued to say; “we initially have room for a main studio, production studio, reception and administration area, in due course we will look to set-up dedicated training facilities, Alan has been very generous in his offer of support.”
Mark had been having a discussion with Alan and operations director Barry Spencer earlier in the week when Alan first made his offer, as Mark was already aware of the location it was decided to take Barry for a viewing where upon he said the location at "The Coach House, Union Street in Cheddar" was ideal.
Alan is committed to the project and has accordingly given the station reassurance by offering a five year tenancy agreement which can be extended as and when required, this has instantly reduced the funding burden on the station which is gratefully received by the board of directors given the current financial climate.
The Cheddar Valley and surrounding areas of Somerset are all set to benefit from the station should its pending licence application be awarded by Ofcom, the station currently broadcast 24/7 online and has proposals for two short term (28 day) trial FM broadcast during 2010, the station broadcasts programmes covering a wide variety of music for all ages combined with local issues, what's on and that all important local news.
Current show schedules include Jazz, Rock, Blues, Soul, Country, and Pop, the station is currently considering Folk and of course local musicians too. One of the main aims of Pulse Radio is to support new artist trying to break into radio, the board of directors are very concious of how hard it is for new emerging talent to get airtime exposer, therefore where groups are found to be suitable in accordance with the stations music policy it will offer them exposer.
The board of directors, consisting of Jacquie Franks, Mark Carney, Mike Ashley and Barry Spencer formally thanked Alan for his outstanding support of the project which is to bring TRUE local radio back to the community.
Ofcom Invitation to submit 'expressions of interest', Ofcom have as of the 21/04/2010 asked potential community stations looking to apply for a five year licence to submit their expression of interest. This will allow Ofcom the opportunity to gauge the number of potential applicants along with what structure the third tier of applications should be dealt in, IE Regional as tier two or National as tier one.
The South West region has not had the opportunity to apply for licences since 2006 so this is seen as an extremely exciting time for all connected in community radio within the South West.
